Genealogy

The IrelandGenWeb Project was created to assist researchers with their family history. Genealogy, to be exact, is a written record of ones lineage. Part of the fun of genealogy is learning about your families history especially in other parts of the world. But part of the problem with genealogy is that it is often a difficult task to research ones own family history from afar.

Internet Genealogy, a relatively new way to research ones family, has been actively providing research, reference and resource information to researchers for about 5 years. Some websites such as RootsWeb have been on the internet longer and have had mailing lists and surname exchange programs utilizing email for 10 years or more.

With all the new resources available to researchers it is often very hard to know which is the best method for conducting research online. We at the IrelandGenWeb think that a good researcher will want to utilize every possible method to help in their search. We do not try to be the best nor are the the most comphrehensive when it comes to providing online resources. There are many good websites out there and you should try to visit as many as you can.

The following items are part of this project and can help you get started with your Irish research:

Electronic Mailing Lists

Electronic mail lists, or email lists, are a great way to start your irish research. All of the counties that participate in this project have email lists and you are encouraged to subscribe to as many as you think you can handle (some have very high volume and others are relatively slow). To see a complete list of all email lists for Ireland, you may want to visit RootsWeb's Index of Ireland Mailing Lists. Note: not all the lists on this page are sponsored by IrelandGenWeb county hosts. All of these lists are FREE to subscribe to and are open to anyone with research interest in the county, province or townland.

To subscribe to a mail list below, click on the link, then type the word SUBSCRIBE in the message box. Do not put any other names, text, or addresses in the mail message. Press send. You will receive a welcome message with instructions on how to post to the mail list.

Query Boards

One of the required elements for each county coordinator on this project is a query board or message center so that visiting researchers can post queries or surnames on them. Not all of our coordinators use an automated system as some prefer to still post queries manually. Visit the County Index and select a query board or visit the county website for more details.

These two boards are for general Irish research queries:

Surname Exchanges

There are many surname lists, surname boards, and surname pages for Irish researchers. If you post a query to one of the GenConnect boards your surnames will automatically be indexed into the Surname Helper Database.
